What Is the Difference Between
Antique, Vintage, and Estate Jewelry?
Antique Jewelry – Refers to pieces that are over 100 years old, often crafted between the early 1900s and 1930s. These items are highly collectible due to their history and craftsmanship.
Vintage Jewelry – Represents jewelry from a specific era or design period, such as Georgian, Victorian, Art Nouveau, Edwardian, Art Deco, Retro, Mid-Century, Modern, and Contemporary styles. Vintage pieces often carry unique designs that reflect the trends of their time.
Estate Jewelry – Simply means previously owned jewelry and can come from any time period. Both antique and vintage jewelry are also considered estate pieces if they were previously owned.
At Sell Your Gold and Silver, we buy all types of jewelry — antique, vintage, and estate. Whether your items are collectible treasures or previously loved modern pieces, our expert appraisers will ensure you receive the best possible value.
Do We Buy Gold Plated and Gold
Filled? What’s the Difference?
When selling gold jewelry, you’ll receive the highest payout for items that contain a high percentage of pure gold. However, many customers also ask about gold plated and gold filled jewelry — here’s what you need to know:
Gold Plated Jewelry
Gold plated items have only a microscopic layer of gold applied over another base metal (such as copper, silver, or nickel). Because the gold content is so minimal, these pieces hold little to no resale value. At this time, we do not buy gold plated jewelry.
Gold Filled Jewelry
Gold filled jewelry contains a much thicker layer of gold bonded to a base metal (often sterling silver or brass). The gold layer makes up a fraction of the item’s total weight, but it is stronger and more durable than plating.
Gold filled items are usually stamped with a hallmark, which indicates:
The proportion of gold (e.g., 1/5, 1/10, 1/20)
The karat rating (e.g., 10k, 12k, 14k)
The letters “GF” (Gold Filled)
Example: A stamp reading “1/5 14k GF” means the piece has a 14k gold layer that accounts for at least 1/5 of the total weight.
While gold filled pieces contain less gold than solid jewelry, we do purchase certain gold filled items, though payouts are lower compared to solid gold jewelry.
