How We Test and Evaluate Your Diamonds

As the value of gold, silver, and rare coins continues to rise, counterfeit coins have become more common in the market. Today, replicas can be found in nearly every denomination, from inexpensive coins to high-value collectibles. That’s why it’s important to know the difference between a real coin and a fake one.

1. Thermal Testing

Diamonds conduct heat differently than imitation stones like cubic zirconia or glass. Using precision diamond testers, we measure how heat passes through your stone to confirm its authenticity.

2. Electrical Conductivity

Because moissanite can mimic a diamond in thermal tests, we also use electronic devices that measure conductivity. This allows us to distinguish diamonds from moissanite and also identify the metals in the setting.

3. Expert Gemologist Inspection

Our GIA-trained gemologists perform a visual inspection with a 10x triplet loupe, carefully analyzing the cut, clarity, color, and carat weight. These characteristics — known as the 4Cs — help determine the overall quality and value of your diamond.

4. Market Value Assessment

Once your diamond is fully tested and graded, we compare it with current market demand. Leveraging our network of industry buyers, we calculate the most competitive price for your diamond jewelry.

After this step-by-step process, you’ll receive a fair, transparent offer with the option for same-day payment.

The 4C’s of Diamond Appraising

At Sell Your Gold and Silver, we confirm authenticity and evaluate every diamond using the 4C’s — Color, Cut, Clarity, and Carat. These characteristics directly inform your offer amount. Learn what we look for below.

Color

In diamonds, less color = higher value. Colorless grades (D–F) and near-colorless (G–J) are generally worth more than stones showing noticeable warmth or yellow tint.

Cut

Cut impacts brilliance and sparkle. Diamonds with Excellent or Very Good cut grades typically command stronger offers than stones with Fair or Poor cuts.

Clarity

We assess the number, size, and position of inclusions and blemishes. Fewer or less visible characteristics usually increase desirability and value

Carat

Carat measures weight (apparent size). Bigger isn’t always better— a smaller diamond with strong grades in the other C’s can be worth more than a larger stone with lower grades.
